Name |
William Wollberg |
- Poor William Wollberg. His name is spelled so many different ways. His last name was probably spelled in Yiddish (German) Vohlberg which means good mountain. You will see it in various documents spelled as Wallberg, Wolberg, Wellberg, etc. His grave marker spells it incorrectly as Wallberg. On his wife's death certificate they even give him a middle name of Holberg and spell his last name Wolberg. For our family history I am using the name in his Will, William Wollberg.

Notes |
- Wil Wollberg was of Russian Jewish estraction. He had a small department store, Wollberg's, in Terre Haute, about fifty feet by fifty feet that had everything in it. They lived in a comfortable apartment above the store. When he died in the early 1920's he had an estate in excess of $200,00. They never had any children.
Following comment from Dave Howard
I have visited the Wollberg burial site. I found his obituary in the local newspaper. I also have his probate record. I will put this information up when I get a chance.
He got his start taking food out to the coal mines on his bicycle. He later built the store. The whole family liked his store. Aunt Loretta has told us stories of going to stay with her Aunt Mary and going through the boxes of goodies way up high on the shelves.
While Will and Mary never had children I did talk with the cemetery in Terre Haute and they had record of a baby buried next to Mary. Perhaps they had one child who died very young.
Amanda, Mary's mother, is also buried right next to them.
Will was a pretty well to do man by the time he passed away.

| Peck - Wallberg [sic] tombstone at highland Lawn Cemetery The last name is spelled incorrectly. It should have been Wollberg. They had to be in the Jewish section of the cemetery. Also buried near by are Amanda Gillespie Peck, James Henry Peck and Mary Elizabeth Peck. There was also a baby Peck burial but no marker. |
