When he heard the Mormon missionaries, he was impressed and shortly after in 1836 , he and his family were baptized. They emigrated to America in 1839 , staying in New Orleans that first winter. They arrived in Nauvoo in the spring where they stayed about four months before moving across the river to Augusta, Iowa , where they purchased a farm. Thomas and his son, Samuel , returned to Nauvoo where they worked in the brick yard. Later they had a brickyard in Augusta . Thomas sold this home in 1849 and made preparations to move with the saints to the Rocky Mountains . They left in 1850 with the James Pace Company, arriving in the Valley in the fall. In December 1850 , Brigham Young called Thomas to go to Iron County . Samuel , being 18 years old, asked if he could go in his father's place. His request was granted. Thomas continued to make bricks and lay them and also took care of his farm until he took a trip to England to dispose of some of his property. On the return trip, he died and was buried at sea.
